Avast Decryption Tools - Babukuk
Avast Decryption Tools: Babukuk, a free utility from the antivirus provider that offers a number of free ransomware decryptors. This latest tool is designed to decrypt files encrypted by the Akira ransomware, which has targeted a wide range of organisations, including universities and financial institutions, as well as daycare centres for children.
The tool can be downloaded and run from a website, meaning there's no need to install it on the computer. It's set up to scan the entire system by default, but you can also target specific folders or drives. Once it finds a file, it will show you its status and whether or not it can be decrypted. If it can, the utility will let you know how much the cybercriminals are demanding for their return.
The application can decrypt files from 20 different types of ransomware, including Alcatraz Locker, Apocalypse, BadBlock, Bart, BTCWare, Crypt888, CryptoMix (Offline), Cobra, JohnyCryptor, CrySiS, EncrypTile, Fonix, Globe HiddenTear, Jigsaw, Legion NoobCrypt, Stampado and TeslaCrypt. It also works on the new HermeticRansom variant, which has been spotted since 2020 and uses a brute force attack to find the encryption key.
Of course, a free decryptor is only one part of the solution, and you should still ensure that your security solutions are up-to-date to prevent ransomware attacks from succeeding in the first place. In addition, a strong backup strategy should be in place to help you recover your data after an infection.
